괴테 작품 파우스트 1부에 나타난 파우스트의 그레트헨과의 비극적 사랑을 통한 고난의 여정과 구원의 탐색고찰 —엘리아데의 성년식의 이론의 관점에서

필자는 논문의 분석의 관점으로 엘리아데의 성년식의 이론을 도입하여 괴테의 작품 파우스트 1부에 내재되어 있는 성년식의 서사구조의 성립배경을 괴테의 호머의 오딧세이와 기독교의 교양체험과 관련하여 살펴보았다. 본 연구는 괴테의 상기한 작품에 등장하는 주인공 파우스트의 그레트헨과의 비극적 사랑을 체험하며 고난의 여정을 통하여 종교적 구원을 찾아가는 탐색과정을 엘리아데의 성년식의 이론의 관점에서 고찰했다. 괴테의 파우스트 작품의 주인공 파우스트가 그와 대결하고 있는 악마 메피스토펠레스한테 그의 영혼을 팔고 관능의 세계에 몸을 맡기고 사랑이라는 욕망의 공간으로 들어가는 과정이 엘리아데의 입사단계에 해당된다. 이번 연구를 통하여 괴테의 파우스트 작품은 주인공 파우스트가 그리트헨과의 비극적 사랑을 체험하면서 구원을 받기까지 성장과정을 보여주는 성년식의 서사구조를 지닌 성장 드라마[Bildungsdrama]임이 밝혀진 셈이다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes Goethe’s Faust I in light of M. Eliade’s theory of initiation. I have considered the cultural and theoretical foundations for the emergence structure of initiation that exists in Goethe’s Faust in relation to Goethe’s educational experiences of Homer’s Odyssey and the Christianity. In the perspective of Eliade’s theory of initiation I have analyzed the process of Faust’s suffering journey through the tragic love with Gretchen, which leads him to religious salvation.
