Abstract

This study examines how the History Atlases for middle and high schools, produced in accordance with the 2022 revised curriculum, depict and improve upon the history of East Asia from the 10th to 14th centuries. Prior to the rise of the Mongol Empire, the international order in East Asia displayed a pluralistic structure, in which states such as the Khitan(Liao), Northern Song, Southern Song, Jin, Western Xia, Goryeo, and Japan were intricately interrelated. As various northern peoples emerged during this time, careful attention must be paid to the terminology and narrative used in textbooks to ensure accurate understanding. Furthermore, since the Mongol Empire itself had a unique political structure and governed an extensive territory encompassing diverse cultural spheres, a nuanced and detailed historical account is required. From this perspective, the 2022 revised curriculum’s History Atlas shows clear efforts toward improvement and revision. For example, the use of dual names such as ‘Khitan(Liao)’ reflects an awareness of the dual nature of state names and an attempt to represent them appropriately. Improvements in terminology are also evident in the explanation of ‘Jingjiao(Eastern Syriac Christianity).’ In addition, maps and narratives that reflect the Mongol Empire’s ulus system have been actively adopted, and some materials even include the travel routes of notable figures such as Rabban Sauma, which is noteworthy. However, there are still areas in need of improvement. For instance, the use of the anachronistic name ‘Lin’an(Hangzhou)’ on maps of the Northern Song period or the characterization of the Yuan dynasty’s founding as a ‘founding of a nation’ can be criticized for lacking historical accuracy. Other issues include the use of terms such as ‘tribute payment’ or ‘Great Yuan Ulus,’ as well as minor errors(such as typos or misidentification of place names) that may seem trivial but can affect historical understanding and should be corrected. In conclusion, the History Atlas has certainly been supplemented and improved more than in previous versions under the 2022 revised curriculum. Nevertheless, continued rigorous cross-examination and incorporation of academic research findings remain necessary. In particular, since the field of world history(East Asian history) has traditionally received less attention than Korean history, it is hoped that broader and more in-depth analysis and critical review will be undertaken in the future. Through such efforts, the historical narratives in textbooks can be made more accurate and balanced.
