Abstract

This study aims to empirically examine the reality of science education activities conducted in the Daegu–Gyeongbuk region during the 1960s and to reassess their historical significance. Recognizing that previous studies on the history of science education in Korea have largely focused on macro-level perspectives—such as central government policy reforms and national curriculum changes—while overlooking regional diversity and the agency of local teachers, this research seeks to reconstruct a 'history of science education from below'. The temporal scope of the study is set between 1960 and 1967, a period just before the full implementation of the UNESCO–UNICEF assisted Korean Science Education Project and a period characterized by vibrant, autonomous educational initiatives within the region. To achieve this aim, the study closely examines the pioneering character of Daegu–Gyeongbuk science education from two distinct perspectives. The first concerns the nature of the region’s science education activities themselves during the 1960s; the second explores the pioneering role the region played in adopting and localizing major American new science education programs—such as PSSC (Physical Science Study Committee), BSCS (Biological Sciences Curriculum Study), and CHEM Study (Chemical Education Materials Study)—which are regarded as turning points in the global history of science education. In doing so, this study investigates how local teachers in Daegu–Gyeongbuk autonomously established new pedagogical paradigms in science education and reconfigured these imported programs to fit their local educational contexts. In conclusion, the development of science education in Daegu–Gyeongbuk during the 1960s was not the outcome of a top-down reform driven by the central government, but rather the result of an intricate interplay among teachers’ professional expertise, their collective solidarity, the practical support of local educational administration, and the ideological framework of national modernization. By uncovering these dynamics, this study restores the regional and socio-historical dimensions of Korean science education history and highlights how local educational practices served as a pioneering foundation for the advancement of national science education.
