The ancient Greek chorus in drama is often seen as an ancient form of a narrative device. Yeats’s play Deirdre uses the Musicians/ chorus slightly differently from the way Greek plays do: Yeats’s technique of telling a story through the musicians de-familiarizes the classical device in multiple ways. In Deirdre, the narrative device is designed to make the audience form preconceptions about characters and to affect the drama’s action.
Abstract
The ancient Greek chorus in drama is often seen as an ancient form of a narrative device. Yeats’s play Deirdre uses the Musicians/ chorus slightly differently from the way Greek plays do: Yeats’s technique of telling a story through the musicians de-familiarizes the classical device in multiple ways.
