Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to understand George Herbert’s stance revealed in “Church-rents and schismes.” The poem, which features the terms “worm,” “rose,” and “dew,” and is analyzed based on the historical events and Herbert's religious views to uncover the meanings of these terms. The results are as follows. First, the term “worm” in the poem symbolizes King Charles I and Catholicism. Secondly, the “rose” symbolizes King James I and the Calvinist church. Based on “The Rose” and “The British Church,” this Calvinist church, where faith is accompanied by actions, exudes the fragrance of Christ, by purifying the human soul through repentance. Lastly, the “dew” symbolizes the gospel of Christ, representing Herbert’s concern about the future of the Calvinist church, but shows his determination to spread the gospel alone if necessary, as it has not yet been preached to many parts of the world. Therefore, as a Calvinist, Herbert mourns the thwarted reform of the English church, but on the other hand anticipates the Calvinist church's progress towards America.
