조지 허버트는 종교관이 모호하다는 논란이 있으며, 그의 시 「영국 교회」는 그의 시집인 『성전』과 조화하기 어렵다. 그의 종교관과 이 시를 이해하기 위해, 17세기 잉글랜드의 역사와 허버트의 전기에 근거해본다. 당시 대외적으로 로마 교회 - 영국 교회 - 암스테르담 교회와 갈등이 있었으며, 대내적으로 선구적인 국교도 - 칼뱅주의 국교도와 순응하는 청교도 - 비순응하는 청교도의 갈등이 있었다. 국왕들은 알미니안이었으나 허버트와 그의 가족들은 칼뱅주의였으므로, 국가의 검열로 인해 허버트의 시는 모호성을 가진다. 그러므로 대외적으로 볼 때, 「영국 교회」의 “언덕 위의 여자”와 “계곡에 사는 여자”와, 그리고 “어머니”는 각각 로마 교회와 암스테르담 교회, 그리고 영국 교회를 의미한다. 그러나 대내적으로 볼 때, 세 여성은 영국 교회 내에 선구적인 국교도와 비순응하는 청교도, 그리고 칼뱅주의 국교도와 순응하는 청교도를 의미한다. 이처럼 「영국 교회」는 대내외적인 이중 해석이 가능하며, 허버트는 칼뱅주의 국교도로서 표면적으로는 성공회의 중도주의를 옹호하지만, 이면적으로는 믿음과 행위가 조화된 이상적인 칼뱅주의 교회를 찬양한다.
Abstract
There is a controversy that George Herbert’s view of religion is ambiguous, and his poem “The British Church” is difficult to harmonize with his poetry The Temple. To understand his view of religion and this poem, it is based on the history of England in the 17th century and the biography of Herbert. At that time, there was an external conflict between the Roman Church - the Church of England - the Amsterdam Church, and internal one between the Avant garde Conformists - the Calvinist Conformists and Conforming Puritans - Non-Conforming Puritans. Kings were Arminians, but Herbert and his family were Calvinists, so Herbert’s poetry had ambiguity due to the government’s repression. Therefore, “The British Church” is open to two interpretations; in the external point of view, “She on the hill”, “She in the valley”, and “Mother” in “the British Church” each respectively represents the Roman Church, the Amsterdam Church, and the Church of England in Europe, and internally represents the Avant garde Conformists, the Non-Conforming Puritans, and the Calvinist Conformists and Conforming Puritans in Britain.
