A Study on the Sound Change of yimu (疑母) in Middle Chinese

The change of yimu (疑母) in Middle Chinese is one of the phonological changes that is important in Chinese history. In the previous studies, the main topics of discussion were the change and differentiation period, differentiation condition and distribution in the Chinese language and dialectology field. This study tried to find the background and reason of sound change of yimu (疑母) in Middle Chinese on inner cause perspective views by using systemicity, symmetry, the economy of language, markedness. The Middle Chinese yimu (疑母) seems to have initial system gap by lose of velar nasal initial, but it has changed into the direction that develops its stability of phonological system by rising of initial system and vowel system’s correlation. Also, the yimu (疑母), which is a velar nasal, has low frequency of segment in linguistic field and it has high markedness compared to other nasal, which brings relatively easy variety. Also the frequency if characters of yimu (疑母) appeared in many documents on the shifting time from ancient Chinese to modern Chinese, it can be seen to have a lot easier change by various factors of change on Middle Chinese yimu (疑母).
