Abstract

This study surveys a few existing modes of Hangl (i.e., the Korean alphabet) transcription of modern Chinese first, then contrasts the Chinese writing system with that of Korean, and then makes a contrastive analysis of Korean phonology and Chinese phonology. Thereafter, this study establishes a new mode of Hangl transcription of modern Chinese on the basis of Zhuyinfuhao (i.e., the First Method of the Mandarin Phonetic Symbols). The new mode of Hangl transcription of modern Chinese turns out to be similar to ‘the Hangl transcription of Chinese’ established by the Korean Ministry of Education; thus, presents only a few improvements on the latter. The new mode of transcription minimizes the number of syllables in Hangl transcription. That is, one Chinese syllable corresponds to one Korean syllable, except for the Chinese syllables with a diphthong rhyme base which correspond to two Korean syllables. When Chinese words appear in Korean text, it is conventional to write their Hanja (i.e., Sino-Korean characters) pronunciations instead of their Chinese pronunciations. However, since the early 1990’s, more often than not Chinese pronunciations have been transcribed in Hangl when Chinese proper nouns appear in Korean text. Since these two types of pronunciation notation are contemporaneous, they tend to cause Koreans―especially the young generation―confusion in learning Sino-Korean pronunciation. Therefore, this study proposes to use parentheses and brackets appropriately in order to distinguish between the two different types of pronunciation notation.
