Abstract

The Study Results on Ilyeon(一然) and Their ProblemsChae, Sang-Sik*攀*Department of History, Pusan National University, Professor攀攀It is just 800 years since Ilyeon(1206～1289) was born. I think that it is important to look back on him in that he was the author of well-known Samgukyusa(三國遺事), although the birth of one person is not important.Many studies on Ilyeon had laid stress on his Samgukyusa. The early remarkable work was Coi Namsun(崔南善)'s bibliographical explanation of it. But some scholars insisted that the study on Ilyeon himself should precede a study on Samgukyusa. Though we set a highly historical value on Samgukyusa, we didn't know his works as Seon Monk(禪僧) well. The restoration of his epitaph was important to research the path of his life. It was restored on the basis of its rubbed copy which was made before it was destroyed. It was remarkable that Cheongbun(淸), Ilyeon's immediate disciple, was identified as Muguek(無極) who appeared in Samgukyusa through a research on his epitaph.The study results on Ilyeon's thoughts also were accumulated. It was found that he embraced Seon(or Zen) thoughts such as Chodong Seon(曹洞禪) and Unmoon Seon(雲門禪), though he followed Kanhwa Seon(看話禪). He was well versed in Textual School(敎學) and Confucianism(儒學), not to mention Seon.Though he had various and tolerant thoughts, he put great emphasis on the Buddhism of Mercy(觀音信仰) after he stayed in Inheung Temple(仁興社). I think that his stress on it meant to provide a religious relief for the people who were exhausted by a long resistance to Mongolia. It also would be a direct motive which he wrote Samgukyusa.
