Abstract

This article is a short review of the newly published book on the legal history of ancient Greece written by Ja-Young Choi (August 2007). Its aim is very limited, for it takes into consideration only that part of the book which concerns Roman law. The author mentions now and then legal institutions of Roman people to throw light on the Greek law. She especially presents a comparative overview in Appendix VIII by collecting representative Roman law materials which seem to have any connection with the Greek legal culture. In this regard, the work offers an interesting occasion for both Greek and Roman legal historians to discuss on the sets of problems, institutional, legal as well as historical. Never intending to judge the book on the whole, the survey of that part pertaining to Roman law shows that the author is thinkably incompetent on the point of Roman law, misunderstanding legal terms, having no ideas of legal issues at hand, making excerpts very awkwardly, translating latin legal sentences without precision, etc. It is a thousand pities to tell the truth, but I am afraid, she discredits herself entirely in so far as her descriptions concern Roman law. The book must be purged of these defects as soon as possible.
