초록

The bean arbor in the Qing-dynasty short story collection Doupeng Xianhua functions as a unique public discourse space, where villagers gather to tell stories, discuss past and present affairs, and exchange opinions freely. Comprising twelve stories, the collection unfolds entirely through the storytelling of villagers beneath the bean arbor. With its distinctive narrative structure, the work transforms the perspectives of Jiangnan rural society on social life during the Ming–Qing transition into literary expression. The theory of “Discourse Community” proposed by Tan Biyou to address certain challenges in rural studies, aims to observe the changes and development of rural society. Literature can be regarded as one mode in which discourse communities manifest themselves among the people. This paper applies discourse community theory to examine the conversational language found in the prologues of Doupeng Xianhua’s stories. It analyzes villagers’ attitudes toward various discourse communities in the Jiangnan setting from four perspectives—“female virtue”, “family ethics”, “social customs and human relationships” and “religious beliefs”. Through this analysis, the study identifies their core discourses and behaviors, while also comparing them with the dominant ideologies of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.
