초록

What did Xenophanes mean by the claim that opinion is allotted to all? What relationship does his claim have with his own theological thought? In attempting to answer these questions and to determine the meaning of ‘opinion’ for Xenophanes within theology, my discussion initially highlights some doxographical disagreement between the sources, using this as a basis on which to question standard views advanced by scholars. Although the sources evidently address Xenophanes’ theological themes, doubts persist over the contexts in which Xenophanes discussed these topics. For it is uncertain whether the versions of the argument included in the Theophrastean material genuinely derived from Xenophanes. By themselves, meanwhile, the sources do not authorize any attribution to his theology of the same deductive character of argument found in Parmenides’ ontology. In expanding on this statement, my discussion further relates Xenophanes’ theological views to his development of skeptical claims in theological and physical areas of discussion. In considering the philosophical rationale and argumentation underlying the Xenophanean theory of god, my work describes how Xenophanes pioneered probabilistic forms of argument, in assigning to theological accounts the status of opinion with plausibility. This Xenophanean treatment of theology is consistent, in my analysis, with the doxographical section of Sextus Empiricus, M. 7.110.

Abstract
