Abstract
Sappho, Greek poetress of the 6th century BCE, left poems in which while men had insignificant roles, women were main characters. Love is a main theme of her poetry in which women are the subject as well as the object of love. And they have a relationship of equality, not one of subordination. Especially they care about what their partners want, and try to satisfy it, not how they seduce and win over their partners. Four of Sappho’s poems (1, 16, 31, 94) are translated and analyzed from Greek texts. Her poetry shows and guides us to the pursuit of beauty and sexuality, awareness about sense of our own body, preparation of adulthood, and true love and its communication, differently from male poets’ poetry. Sappho’s poetry shows that women could be independent, choosing, desiring, and consoling human beings, rather than dependent, chosen, desired by men.
