Abstract
This study is focused on the apologetic characters developed in Plato’s Charmides. In this dialogue, Socrates tries to define the moderation (sōphrosunē) with two young interlocutors, Charmides and Critias. But it seems that behind the philosophical investigation on the moderation, there exists Plato’s another intention, i.e. that of the defense of Socrates. It is well known that Socrates has been blamed by his enemies for having a bad influence on young people. To justify their blame, they point out the fact that Critias, the leader of the Thirty Tyrants, was the pupil of Socrates in his youth. Against this blame, Plato intented to defend his teacher in writing the Charmides. In this dialogue, Socrates and Critias communicate with Charmides, the young and beautiful boy. The beauty of Charmides stirred up the irrational desires: Socrates suffers the sexual impulse, while Critias feels the desire for fame. In this respect, Charmides seems to play a role of testing the moderation of his partners. Socrates succeeds to governing himself against the sexual impulse, so that he proves to be a man of moderation. On the contrary, Critias fails to govern himself, so that he revealed the lack of moderation. By this dramatic contrast between Socrates and Critias, Plato concludes that Critias could not avoid the corruption not by the bad influence of Socrates, but simply by his lack of moderation.
