Abstract

In his lecture of June 1990, Prof. Park Hong-Kyu (1919-1994) picked Plato on war out as a central theme. According to this lecture, Plato’s thoughts on a war are to be best interpreted in terms of his project of overcoming the nihilism, or on the level of metaphysical discussion. In ancient world, a war had not only a character of means to secure the existence of men as a historical being, but also a destructive effect even to the victorious party. To override this adverse effect, there should be an excellence of soul to integrate the splitting-self. This leads to the question, what enables the self-sufficiency of human being in its totality. An individual participating in a war needs a protection of society, and the society requires a social justice based on human body and common ground of space and time, but only in philosophy that discerns and reflects limits of social justice, one can grasp all the profound dimensions of a war. This article analyses and reconstructs the points of this lecture and suggests that according to this understanding, Plato’s philosophy can be interpreted as an endeavor to overcome intellectually the shady side of a war, and by the same token, Prof. Park’s lecture itself was an effort to be master of his own existential experience of wars.
