Abstract

Since Adalbert Kuhn suggested the affinities of “κλέος ἄφθιτον” with “śrávas... ákṣitam” in Rigveda, this Iliadic phrase has been recognized as the evidence that proves the Indo-European heritage to Homeric poems. Furthermore, in the wake of Milman Parry’s formula-centred theory “κλέος ἄφθιτον” has been not only employed to support Homeric epic’s orality but also identified with a dominant theme— “imperishable glory”—of heroic epic tradition. This line of interpretation, however, draws upon a sort of circularity and, to be worse, reduces the Iliadic phrase that brings about tragic irony to the generic term subsumed under the long-standing Indo-European poetic tradition. Based on this recognition, this paper aims at delineating the artistically exquisite singularity of “κλέος ἄφθιτον”; and then attempts to clarify that this unprecedented phrase functions to epitomize the new “Homeric Question”, a dynamic tension between tradition and innovation
