초록
This paper addresses the importance in the forensic rhetoric of classical Athens of the concept of friendship (philia), and also of its counterpart enmity (echthra). I examine how speakers use friendships to support both the credibility of their narratives and the justice of their case, as well as the injustice of their opponent's case. Examples are taken from the orators Antiphon (speech 1), Lysias (speeches 1 and 12), Isaeus (speeches 4, 5 and 6), Demosthenes (speech 54), and Apollodorus ([Dem.] 47).
