Abstract

As inequality intensifies globally, scholars are exploring urban inequality from multiple perspectives. One particularly useful lens is the ‘geography of opportunity,’ a concept introduced in the mid-1990s to address spatial segregation based on race and class in Western contexts. Although this concept has garnered attention in the West, there remains a gap in both theoretical and empirical discussions relevant to our own context. This paper critically assesses the applicability of the Western-centric ‘geography of opportunity’ to our specific reality. We caution against the uncritical adoption of Western frameworks and seek to elucidate the potential and limitations of this concept in understanding the evolving spatio-temporal dynamics of our cities. Ultimately, this research posits that a nuanced understanding of the ‘geography of opportunity’ is essential to grasp the intricacies and implications of escalating spatial inequality in our cities.
