Abstract
This study explores the subtle and elusive mode of power that operates in, by, and through everyday spaces by drawing on the case of ‘No-Kids Zones’ in South Korea. Over the last few years, Korea has seen the emergence and spread of ‘No-Kids Zones’: small hospitality businesses that deny the entry of children under a certain age based on the shopkeepers’ entrepreneurial yet arbitrary decisions. The main arguments of this research are as follows: First, ‘No-Kids Zones’ govern the everyday lives of individuals in ways different from traditional techniques of governing, such as CCTVs, spatial designs, and public polls. Instead, the spatial power of ‘No-Kids Zones’ manifests itself at micro-level, as a result of hate speech and discourse in cyberspace combined with the practice of spatial exclusion in everyday life. Second, in terms of the lived experiences, the spatial power of ‘No-Kids Zones’ works beyond its physical boundaries and extends outwards. Interviews conducted as part of this research show that women self-discipline their behaviours when they accompany their children to privately-owned public spaces (otherwise referred to as ‘quasi-public space’ in this research), indicating that the very existence of ‘No-Kids Zones’ restricts the mobility and behavior of female caretakers in public spaces. Altogether, this research demonstrates that, despite its name, it is the mothers who are stigmatized by ‘No-Kids Zones’, whose presence is governed by the fairly misogynistic on- and offline discourses concerning women’s presence in and use of public space. Therefore, this research calls for a more nuanced understanding of how discrimination, exclusion, and unequal power dynamics play themselves out through privately-owned public spaces and the online-offline continuum, which constructs the uneven geographies of the everyday.
