Abstract

This paper explores the gendered infrastructural labour of women engaged in mussel farming and processing along the coast of Jinhae Bay, South Korea. Centring on bakshinjang—a raft-based mussel-processing site built over public waters—the research applies the conceptual framework of infrastructural labour to understand how women’s repetitive, embodied practices sustain coastal infrastructure. Through ethnographic and sensory fieldwork, the study examines how crouched bodies and tirelessly shucking hands perform deeply rhythmic survival labour in an unstable coastal economy. Despite recurring risks like shellfish toxins, supply chain volatility, and ongoing development conflicts, bakshin labour remains rooted in place, sustained by women who continue to occupy and embody this precarious coastal space. Their persistent presence anchors a vital node within local fisheries infrastructure amid institutional voids and ecological uncertainty. The research reveals this labour as simultaneously embodying “floating livelihoods”—precarious work on water—and “moored labour”—seasonally and bodily fixed rhythms that provide continuity. Thus, this paper illustrates the ways in which marine infrastructure is constituted and sustained through women’s productive labour, care work, and everyday repetitive practices, thereby reconceptualizing infrastructure as a product of infra-ordinary routines of coastal life
