한국에서 반려견 양육 인구가 꾸준히 증가하면서 반려동물 친화적 도시와 공간은 중요한사회적 관심사가 되고 있다. 하지만 반려동물과 도시, 인간 간의 관계를 조명한 국내 연구는 여전히 제한적이다. 이 연구는 서울 해방촌의 독특한 반려견 문화를 탐구하고, 그를 둘러싼 환경 및 사회적 관계를 분석하는 자전적 민족지 방식의 사례연구를 수행하였다. 연구결과, 해방촌은 다양한 배경의 주민들과 반려견이 조화롭게 공존하는 공간임을 확인하였으며, 또한 개와 사람의 상호 인내에 기반한 사회적 관계와 문화적 전환이 반려견과 공존하는도시환경 형성에서 최우선으로 고려되어야 함을 발견하였다. 더불어 이 탐색 과정을 통해반려동물 친화적 도시 조성을 위한 다음의 핵심 요소들을 도출하였다. ① 다양성과 개방성, ② 물리적 환경과 인프라, ③ 사회적 관계망, ④ 반려동물 문화에 대한 이해와 존중, ⑤ 유연한 제도와 규범. 이 다섯 가지 요소는 해방촌을 반려견 친화적 공간으로 형성하는 데 기여하고 있으며, 개와 사람이 조화롭게 공존할 수 있는 반려동물 친화적 도시환경 조성을 위한특성과 조건으로 작용한다. 이렇듯 반려동물과 사람이 함께 편안하고 안전하게 살아갈 수있는 도시는 모두가 찾아오고 싶어 하는 곳이며, 한 번 머물게 되면 쉽게 떠나고 싶지 않은매력적인 공간이 될 것이다.
Abstract
As the number of dog owners in South Korea continues to rise, pet-friendly cities and spaces have emerged as a significant social concern. Despite this trend, domestic research on the relationships between pets, urban environments, and humans remains limited. This study examines the unique dog culture of Seoul's Haebangchon through an autoethnographic case study, analyzing its environmental and social dynamics. The findings indicate that Haebangchon is a community where diverse residents and their dogs coexist harmoniously. Five key factors for creating petfriendly cities were identified: ① diversity and openness, ② physical infrastructure, ③ social networks, ④ respect for pet culture, and ⑤ flexible systems. These elements establish Haebangchon as a model for pet-friendly spaces and underscore essential conditions for building urban environments that support safe and comfortable coexistence between pets and humans. Such cities not only enhance urban livability but also promote sustainable human-animal relationships through inclusive environments.
