Abstract
“Joeun” is a new semi - hard wheat variety with early maturity and good milling quality. It was developed from a cross between “Eunpamil” and “Suwon 242” at the National Crop Experiment Station, RDA. “Eunpamil” as a female parent was medium in plant height and high in flour yield. “Suwon 242” as a male parent was a wheat breeding line with early maturity. A pedigree line of SW87010-B-16-4-2-3 was selected after bulk selection of the F1 generation, and tested for yield performance in the preliminary and advanced yield trials from 1994 to 1997. The selected line was named as “Suwon 279”, and tested for the regional yield trials at four locations in Korea from 1998 to 2000. “Suwon 279” was named as “Joeun” when released as a recommended variety for paddy and upland cultivation over the country. “Joeun” matured earlier by five to seven days than the check variety, “Geurumil”. It had red colored, medium-sized and semi-hard grains. Its grain yield was lower than that of “Geurumil” due to earlier maturity. This newly developed cultivar was short in the earliness in narrow sense. Growth habit of “Joeun” was facultative type with a degree of III. It had good milling yield and noodle-making qualities.
