A Crisp and Delicious Leaf Lettuce Cultivar, ＂Jeokhagye＂

Abstract

It is difficult to produce lettuce in the summer season owing to bolting and several diseases, especially soft rot (Erwinia carotovora supsp. carotovora). We developed a bred the new red leaf lettuce cultivar Jeokhagye, which is crisp, delicious and tolerant to soft rot. It was bred from a cross between LL 125c26 (late bolting and high yield) and LL 102c2 (late bolting and disease resistance) in 1997. We had selected desired lines which generated by pedigree selection until 2001. Especially, we advanced four generation for the last two years. These lines were evaluated for yield and genetic purity in both lowland and highland sites, and then one line was finally selected on the basis of yield and field tolerance to soft rot.We named this line Jeokhagye. Jeokhagye has brown seed and traverse elliptic leaves. Compared to a check variety Ttugseom-jeokchugmyeon, marketable yield of Jeokhagye was higher by 2% in lowland and by 12% in highland sites.
