Abstract
Hacheong is a new leaf lettuce variety developed at the National Institute of Highland Agriculture during the periodfrom 1999 to 2004 through a pedigree selection program. Hacheong was selected from a cross between a late bolting and highyielding Haji-cheongchugmyeon and a late bolting and disease Autumn Gold. Hacheong is a very late bolter and tip-burn resistantand has light green and broad elliptical leaves with les bitter taste than current leading variety, Yeorem-cheongchugmyeon.Hacheong contains less amount of total bitter sesquiterpene lactones(BSL) of 48.1g/g than the check variety of 58.6g/g dryweight. In 6 regional adaptability trials conducted in five locations from 2003 to 2004, the new variety showed higher yieldingability consistently than the check variety by approximately 7%.
