현대 한국 천주교의 종교적 특성에 관한 고찰

오늘날 한국의 천주교는 총인구 대비 10%에 육박하는 교세를 보유하고 있으며, 일반 한국인들에게도 그다지 낯설지 않은 모습으로 존재한다. 하지만 실제로는 여타의 그리스도교 교단들과 구체적으로 어떻게 다른지, 그리고 그러한 특성이 언제 어떻게 형성되었는지를 전체적으로 알려주는 글을 발견하기는 쉽지 않다. 이 글은 특정 종교 교단으로서 천주교가 지닌 다양한 면모들을 종합적으로 검토하여, 21세기 한국 종교계가 보이게 될 변화의 진폭 속에서 천주교가 어떤 상황에 처할 것인지를 가늠하려는 목적으로 작성된 것이다. 종교연구자들이 특정 종교현상을 설명할 때 가장 널리 사용하는 도식은 교리, 의례, 조직의 세 가지 측면으로 분석하는 것이다. 여기서도 이러한 도식에 맞추어 한국 천주교의 종교적 특성을 교리체계, 의례실천, 교단조직으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 먼저 로마 교황청이 인준한 공식적인 교리서를 중심으로 천주교의 교리 내용과 의례 문화를 소개하였다. 아울러 그것이 지닌 의미를 좀 더 부각시키기 위하여 다른 그리스도교 교단의 경우와 비교하거나, 한국 천주교의 특수 상황과 관련지어 설명하였다. 또한 천주교의 교단조직이 매우 복잡한 원리로 구성되어 있는 만큼, 이른바 교회법전에서 규정하고 있는 조직 원리를 토대로 하여 한국 천주교의 조직체계를 개괄적으로 다루었다.
Abstract
The number of catholics in Korea amounts up to the 10% of the total population, and Korean Catholicism is not considered as a foreign religion. Nevertheless, actually it is not easy to find the articles explaining clearly the differences between Catholicism and other christian organizations, i.e., the protestant denominations or the Orthodox Church. So we would like to do it through identifying the various characteristics of Korean Catholicism, and estimate its future aspects on the basis of the configuration of korean religions in the 21th century. Many people in the study of religion prefer to apply the triad schema, dogma, ritual and community for analysing the particular religious phenomena. We also traced several religious features of Korean Catholicism from the perspective of dogmatical teaching, ritual practice and hierarchical system. The former two were extracted from the official catechism of Roman Catholicism, and the last from the present Code of Catholic Canon Law.
