한국의 신종교는 전통종교와 달리 상대적으로 짧은 역사로 인해 제도화 과정이 완결되지 않은 종단이 적지 않으며, 이 중 일부는 강한 카리스마로 신앙공동체를 이끌던 창교자의 사망 후 심각한 내부적 분열을 겪으면서 교리적, 의례적 차원에서뿐 아니라 조직적 차원에서도 커다란 변화를 거치고 있다. 이렇듯 구조적 안정성이 상대적으로 취약한 신종교를 연구하는 데 있어 무엇보다 조직적 차원의 연구가 중요한 것은 내⋅외적 요인으로 커다란 격변기에 있는 신종교의 경우 이들이 어떻게 체제의 재정비와 권력구조의 변화를 통해 내부의 안정 또는 통합을 꾀하는가를 파악할 수 있으며, 또한 이러한 제도화 과정에서 종단의 취약점이나 문제점이 드러나기 때문이다. 본 논문에서는 우선 종교사회학에서 종교조직에 관한 연구가 어떤 이슈를 중심으로 진행되고 있는가를 개괄적으로 살펴보고, 이어서 한국 신종교의 조직구조를 조사⋅분석한 선행연구들을 비판적으로 고찰하였다. 이러한 작업은 선행 연구의 주된 관심사와 연구 방향을 파악하기 위함이며, 이를 바탕으로 본 논문의 마지막 부분에서는 한국 신종교 조직연구에서 시급하게 요구되는 일련의 연구과제를 제시하였다. 따라서 본고는 새로운 연구결과를 도출하기보다, 신종교 조직연구가 본격화된 90년도 초부터 현재까지 한국학계가 생산한 관련 연구물들을 다시 한번 점검하고, 이제까지 간과되었거나 필요한 미래의 연구과제는 무엇인가를 논의하고자 하는 시론적 성격을 강하게 가진다. 이는 신종교 연구가 교리나 사상에 치중된 다분히 이상적이고 추상적인 논의에 머물지 않고, 개별 신종교들이 자신들의 집단적 목표를 조직적 차원 즉구체적이고 현실적인 조건에서 어떻게 실현⋅추진 혹은 변경하고 있는가를 논의함으로써 신종교 연구의 지평을 넓히고자 함이다.
Abstract
Unlike Korean traditional religions, Korean new religions have a relatively short history, and that is the main reason why many of these religions have not yet completed the institutionalization process. Some Korean new religions have suffered serious internal division after the death of the founder who led the belief community with strong charisma, and they are still changing not only in doctrinal and ritual but also organizational dimension. Organizational research is quite crucial to grasp how new religions attempt to stabilize or reintegrate their system through reform of or radical change in the power/organizational structure, while the vulnerabilities and internal problems of these religions are exposed during the process. At the first part of this article, key issues and theories in the current studies on the religious organization are introduced. And as next step, the research results are critically reviewed which put the focus on the organizational structure of Korean new religions produced by South Korean academics from the beginning of the 1990s. At the last part, a series of research subjects as well as research directions are suggested which seem to be of importance for the future studies on the organization of Korean new religions. This work is eventually to push the boundary of studies on Korean new religions.
