초록

이 글은 한국의 정치세대가 공유하는 집합기억에 대해 분석한다. 일반적으로 정치세대는 성년 전후의 ‘민감한 시기’에 출생 코호트 집단이 함께 경험한 역사적 사건으로 구획된다. 기존 연구는 정치세대를 여러 시대적 기준에 따라 나누어왔는데, 출생 코호트 구성원들이 실제로 세대 정체성을 공유하는지는 탐구된 바 없다. 이 글은 사실로 전제되어온 세대구획이 경험적 기반을 갖는지에 대해 집합기억을 통해서 살펴본다. 한국 현대사의 주요 사건에 대한 자전적 기억을 통해서 세대 간 차이가 있는지 분석한다. 더불어 그들 사건에 대한 역사적 평가가 세대마다 다른지도 따져보았다. 분석 결과는 ‘민감한 시기’ 가설이 부분적으로만 충족되는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 20세 전후 시기에 공통적으로 경험한 사건이 가장 많이 회고되는 경우는 일부에 그쳤다. 특히 가장 많이 집합기억으로 지목된 IMF 외환위기는 30대 중반에서 회고절정이 나타났다. 주요 사건에 대한 평가에서는 세대 간 체계적인 차이가 발견되지만, 차이의 규모는 미미한 정도였다. 요컨대 한국에서 집합기억은 세대 정체성을 구성하는 데 부분적으로만 영향을 미치고 있음을 알 수 있다.

Abstract

The paper examines the role of collective memory in identifying political generations. According to Mannheim, generation units common in the year of birth can develop into concrete group by sharing common historical experience, particularly in ‘impressionable years’‑late adolescence and early adulthood. While previous studies have classified political generations by critical events that birth cohorts experience in their youth, they fail to show the evidence that each generation have shared past, i.e. collective memory. Using survey data, I explore the generational difference in reminiscence bump of ‘most important political events. Result only partially support the hypothesis that political generations have shared collective memory.
