Abstract

This study examines the paintings of the Nakdong River and the Hahoe area produced by the Pungsan Ryu clan, based on historical records and surviving works, within the context of scholarly lineages and familial commemoration. In 1568, Ryu Jung-young commissioned a screen painting depicting his hometown before his reassignment. The painting had verse inscriptions contributed by Jeong Yu-gil, Yi Hwang, and officials who had been granted royal leave (賜暇) to pursue study and self-cultivation at the Scholarly Retreat by the Han River. In 1578, Ryu Seong-ryong similarly commissioned a work expressing filial piety, although the artwork was later lost during the Imjin War. After the Imjin War, the clan employed visual art to reinforce social ties with local authorities. In 1828, Ryu Cheol-jo requested the “Haoepalgokdo screen,” showcasing key sites along the Nakdong River and reflecting the cultural identity and scholarly heritage of the Toegye scholarly lineage. The three extant Hahoe-do paintings created by the Pungsan Ryu clan convey the clan’s academic lineage, Confucian values, and the practical succession of Yi Hwang’s learning. However, the modes of expression evolved over time. Beginning in the 16th century with Ryu Jung-young and Yi Hwang, the paintings reflected emotional attachment to the homeland, emphasizing filial piety and the spatial embodiment of Neo-Confucian ideals. By the 19th century, they had developed into cultural-historical reconstructions centered on the scholarly networks of the Yeongnam gentry society. Ultimately, these paintings serve as visual evidence of how the Neo-Confucian identity of the Yeongnam Namin lineage, centered on the Pungsan Ryu clan, was reproduced and transmitted across time and space.
