이 연구는 국내외 농촌사회학 연구의 최근 동향을 추적함으로써, 새로운 농촌사회학의 과제를 발견하고자 했다. 이러한 작업은 농촌사회학의 역할에 대한 질문을 배경으로 한다. 특히 지속가능성 위기에 처해 있는 현실 속에서 농촌사회학과 관련 연구자들이 대안 모색에 나서야 한다는 주장을 펼치고자 했다. 먼저 농촌사회학의 형성과 그발전궤적을 정리하였다. 농촌사회학의 태동과 제도화, 그리고 1970-80년대 이후의 새로운 농촌사회학 발달과 이후의 분화 과정을 소개했다. 이어서 최근 3년 동안 미국, 유럽, 그리고 한국의 대표적인 농촌사회학 학술지의 연구 논문들에 대한 경험적 분석을시도하였다. 분석결과 미국과 유럽에서는 환경/재난과 여성/젠더 등이 중요한 주제로 등장하고 있었다. 한국의 경우 상대적으로 환경/재난 관련 연구가 부족했고, 반면사회적 가치에 대한 연구가 많았다. 방법론에 대해서도 정리했는데, 일반적으로 질적연구의 비중이 컸다. 연구자의 전공은 다수가 사회학 전공자들이었지만, 매우 다양한전공 배경을 갖고 있음도 알 수 있었다. 경험적 분석을 통해 농촌사회학 연구자들이환경/재난, 불평등/빈곤, 여성/젠더 등의 문제에 대해 더 적극적으로 관심을 가질 필요가 있음을 지적했다. 나아가 이러한 이슈들은 농촌 및 한국사회 전체의 지속가능성과 직결된다는 점에서, 향후 농촌사회학의 적극적 역할을 제안하였다. 농의 사회적 가치를 중심에 둔 지속가능성 기획에 농촌사회학자들이 기여해야 함을 강조하였다.
Abstract
This research attempts to explore the tasks of rural sociology by reviewing recent research trends in rural sociological field. This effort reflects the question of what should be the social role of rural sociologists. I would argue that researchers in rural sociology should engage in searching for alternatives to overcome the current sustainability crisis. I introduced the birth and trajectory of rural sociology in the West and its development in the 1970s and 80s, which was followed by theoretical fragmentation and differentiation. I analyzed rural sociological journals in the U.S., Europe, and South Korea from 2019 to 2021. The analysis found that environment/disaster and female/gender issues are very popular in the West, while environmental issue was less researched in South Korea. In South Korea, social values such as sustainability, justice, and resilience are quite frequently studied. In terms of method, qualitative researches were popular in all 3 regions. Compared to other social science fields, the percentage of female authors were relatively high. As a final comment, I argued that environment, inequality, and gender issues needed to be more deeply studied by Korean scholars. I recommended that rural sociologists should play an active role in constructing and implementing sustainability project to overcome the current symptoms of socio·ecolocial crisis.
