『농촌사회』와 한국의 농촌사회학 연구 - 경향과 과제

이 논문은 한국농촌사회학 연구가 어떻게 변해왔으며, 현재 어디에 있는지를 고찰하고자 했다. 이를 위해 우선 한국농촌사회학회의 학술지인 『농촌사회』의 논문들에 대한 경험적 분석을 시도했다. 1991년 창간호부터 2017년 겨울호에 게재된 총 324편을 주제별, 전공별로 분석하여 특징들을 도출하였다. 그 결과 초기에 많이 연구되던 농촌 현장의 구체적인 문제들에 대한 연구가 감소하고, 식품 관련 연구가 크게 증가하였음을 발견할 수 있었다. 이와 더불어 2018년 아시아농촌사회학회에서 발표된 84편의 논문들을 『농촌사회』에 최근 게재된 88편의 논문들과 비교하여, 한국 농촌연구의 특징을 보다 선명하게 밝히고자 하였다. 아시아농촌사회학회 발표 논문들과의 비교를 통해서도 한국 농촌사회학 연구가 식품 관련 연구에 편중되어 있고, 상대적으로 농촌 문제 관련 연구는 소수라는 점을 확인하였다. 이러한 분석 결과는 한국 농촌사회학의 정체성에 대한 깊은 고민과 치열한 토론이 필요함을 의미한다. 사회변동과 연구 환경의 변화 속에서 이뤄진 식품과 대안먹거리에 대한 연구 활성화가 농촌 현장의 구체적 문제에 대한 연구 부족 현상과 무관하다고 할 수 없기 때문이다.
Abstract
This study attempts to understand the changes and key features of Korean rural studies by examining researches carried out by sociologists and experts in the related fields. In order to so, I analyzed 324 articles published in the Journal of Rural Studies, the official journal of Korean Rural Sociological Society, since 1991 till 2017 by categorizing the articles according to the subjects and the authors’ majors. I found that there has been significant growth of food-related studies while researches on rural communities and rural problems have decreased. In addition, I have analyzed the subjects of recently published articles at Journal of Rural Studies with papers that were presented at the 6th International Conference of Asian Rural Sociological Association. The comparison of two groups of papers also showed that Korean rural studies are much more interested in food-related issues while researches in other regions of Asia are more interested in the problems that are directly related with the rural communities. These results, I argue, raise the identity issue of what is Korean rural sociology. While food issue is certainly very important one today in Korea, this may have led to relative neglection of concrete issues that are of concer for Korean farmers and rural communities.
