현대예술의 비표상성과 화이트헤드의 상징론

본고는 현대예술과 이론의 비표상주의적 실천들에서 나타나는 철학적, 예술적 난점을 화이트헤드의 상징적 지각론을 통해 해소하고자 하는 데 목적이 있다. 포스트모더니즘으로 대변되는 현대의 예술적 실천들과 이론들은 이러한 근대적 표상주의의 한계를 지적하며, 동시대의 예술이 비표상적 실재(화이트헤드가 인과적 효과성이라고 부른 것)를 탐구해야 한다고 역설한다. 그러나 필자가 보기에 동시대의 비표상주의는 여전히 표상주의적 논리로 작동하고 있는 자본주의의 폭력적 총체화와 시각적 스펙터클에 대한 거부감 때문에 표상주의에 대한 과도한 비판을 진행했고, 그 결과 비표상적인 것을 종국에는 알 수 없는 것으로 설정했고, 이는 표상과 비표상의 건널 수 없는 갭을 만들 냈다. 그러나 화이트헤드의 상징론은 표상(현시적 직접성)과 비표상(인과적 효과성)이 현실적 존재 내에서 상징적으로 연관됨으로써 우리의 의식적 지각이 나타난다고 본다는 점에서 이들의 접점을 합리적으로 마련해 준다. 표상은 인과적 효과성이라는 보다 근원적인 지각의 방식이 현실적 존재의 보다 후기 위상에서 추상한 결과 의식에 나타난 것이다.
Abstract
The purposes of this thesis lies in resolving the artistic and philosophical problem, which displayed in contemporary arts and theories of non-representationalism, by means of Whitehead’s theory of perception as symbolic reference. Contemporary artistic practices and theories spoken for postmodernism, commenting the limits of modern repres- entationalism, agitate that contemporary arts should explore the non-representational reality(what Whitehead calls causal efficacy). However, in my view, non-representationalism excessively criticised representationalism for the reason that the totalization and visual spectacles of capitalism are still based on modernistic representationalism, after all, it made the unrepresentable the unknowable, the untraversable gap between them. But Whitehead’s symbolism rationally provides the meeting point between them in that representa tion(presentational immediacy) and non-representation(causal efficacy) are symbolically associated in the actual entity. In whitehead’s system the representation are presented in consciousness in later phase of concrescence as a result of being abstracted the common elements between them from more fundamental elements of perception.
