Abstract
The expression theory of art, which is one of the essentialist definitions of art and provides the most basic view of understanding art until now. The purpose of this paper lies in exploring the possibility of expansion of it and characterizing art in an alternative way from the viewpoint of Whitehead's aesthetic ontology. The point of distinguishing the expression theory from other theories is that expressing or appreciating in art is about emotion. But this crucial thesis distinguishes expressionism from other theories and at the same time exposes the limits of not including other aspects of art. For example, the theory loses explanatory power when it faces artworks that do not focus on expression of emotions, or display conceptual ideas rather than emotions. Nevertheless, in this paper I attempted to defend the core premise of expression theory of art, that is, the emotional aspect, as essential in art, through the philosophical view of Whitehead, and furthermore argued the way in which its propositional(concept and idea) aspects can be legitimately subsumed to emotional aspects One of the key tasks of this paper is to show that all experiences are fundamentally emotional experiences, beyond the arbitrary distinction of emotional and non-emotional, and the other is to discuss that even conceptual or propositional elements in the works of art are always given as emotional experiences, and furthermore, they can enhance the intensity of aesthetic experience insofar as they are in harmonious contrast with the underlying affectional and physical emotions through Whiteheadian metaphysical system. Finally, in this paper, I tried to characterize art in the specified way which experience integrates senses and propositions in consciousness
