본 논문은 화이트헤드의 유기체 철학에 기반한 <새로운 사회학> 구상에 있어 그 기초 핵심 개념으로서 쓰일 수 있는 <단위 행태>unit attitude에 대한 고찰을 중점적으로 담고 있는 글이다. 여기서 제시하고 있는 <단위 행태>는 인간 사회의 양태를 이해함에 있어서도 사회학적 지평에서 기본 단위 개념으로 쓰일 수 있도록 하였다. 인간 사회를 파악함에 있어 <사회>society라는 인류 공동체의 활동들을 형성하는 데에 있어 가장 기본적인 사회학적 지평의 원자적 단위를 나는 <단위 행태>unit attitude라고 부를 것이다. 화이트헤드의 현실적 존재가 형이상학적 지평이라는 존재론의 원자적 개념이라고 한다면, 본인이 제시하는 <단위 행태>는 화이트헤드가 말하는 형이상학적 사태를 그 기본 얼개로 이미 깔고서 인간 사회활동을 고찰하는 사회학의 지평에서 쓰일 수 있도록 마련해 본 창의적인 응용 개념에 속한다. 이른바 화이트헤드의 형이상학에 <사회학적 상상력>sociological imagination을 덧입혔다고 보면 되겠다. 그리고 이러한 단위 행태가 연속체를 이루면서 어떤 한 사람이라는 인격체를 형성하는 사태를 나는 <실재적 개인>real individuality이라고 부른다. 나 자신이 제시하는 <단위 행태>는 사회학에서 구조와 행위를 연결하는 핵심 용어로서 좀더 구체적으로 분석된 개념이라고 생각된다. 기존의 대부분의 사회학 연구들은 존재론과 우주론이라는 형이상학의 지평에까지 치밀하게 고찰되지는 못한 채로 정초된 점이 있는데, 그런 점에서 우리는 바야흐로 화이트헤드의 과정 형이상학에 기반한 채로 이를 새롭게 창조적으로 응용해보려는 <새로운 사회학>에 대한 그림들을 구상해볼 수 있다고 하겠다. 창조적 문명을 열어가는 화이트헤드 철학의 모험은 앞으로도 계속 될 것이다.
Abstract
This thesis is a writing containing study on unit attitude which can be used as a basic core concept in working on <New Sociology> based on Whitehead’s process philosophy. <Unit Attitude> suggested here can be used as a basic concept on the sociological horizon in understanding the mode of human society. I will call <Society>, which is atomic unit of the most basic sociological horizon in forming human being’s community, as <Unit Attitude>. While Whitehead’s actual entity is atomic concept of metaphysical ontology, <Unit Attitude> I suggest here is the most basic unit existence at sociology in forming human being’s society based on events in which actual entities react with each other. We can think that so called, <Sociological Imagination> is added to Whitehead’s metaphysics. And, this kind of unit attitude forms a continuum and makes up a person’s personality. I will call this event as <Real Individuality>. <Unit Attitude> is similar to habitus which connects structure and behavior suggested by P. Bourdieu, a France sociologist, but <Unit Attitude> is an analyzed concept in more detail than habitus of P. Bourdieu. The existing sociological studies have not been inquired to be laid up to the horizon of metaphysical horizon. In this respect, we can imagine new sociological theory based on Whitehead’s process metaphysics.
