본 논문은 화이트헤드의 유기체 철학을 통해 생물학적 결정론을 고찰하고자 했다. 화이트헤드는 자신의 유기체 철학을 통해 우주를 생명이 있는 하나의 연속체로 파악하려 한다. 그리고 데카르트는 자연과 생명을 지나치게 이분법적으로 구분해 왔다고 설명한다. 그의 유기체 철학은 존재세계 전체 속에서 각각의 부분들이 상호영향을 미치며 내적으로 연결된 하나의 유기체라는 점에 대한 설명으로 기획되었다. 그리고 설명에 필요한 구성요소로서 그의 새로운 우주론은 중요한 위치를 차지한다. 물론 사회생물학이 여러 가지 문제점을 안고 있는 것은 사실이다. 그것은 사회와 문화에 대해 지나치게 단순한 견해를 가지고 인류학적 자료들을 분석하고 있는데, 인간의 학습행위와 문화의 전승, 그리고 인간행위의 동기적인 복잡성을 고려하지 않는다는 점이다. 인간개체는 적응이나 생식의 극대화를 위해 투쟁하는 것이 아니라, 문화적으로 규정된 목표와 가치에 의해 그 행위가 동기지워진다. 그러므로 사회생물학의 가장 큰 문제점은 사회생물학적 모델을 생물적이 아닌 진화, 즉 문화적 진화를 설명하는데 사용한다는 점이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to review the biological determinism of sociobiology based on Whitehead's philosophy of organism. Although Descartes placed nature and life into a dichotomy of two separate parts, Whitehead argues in his philosophy that the universe is one living nexus. In Whitehead's philosophy of organism, each part in the world exists as a whole, an inherently connected organism, and all parts reciprocally influence one another. His new cosmology plays an important role in his philosophy of organism. The paper concludes that sociobiology has various problems. Specific problems included in Sociobiology are as follows : 1. Sociobiology does not take address learning behavior. 2. It does not include the transition of traditional culture. 3. And it fails to adequately face the complex motivation of human behavior. The major problem of sociobiology is to apply a sociobiological model to cultural evolution, not to biological evolution. The aim of Whitehead's philosophy is to restructure and reorganize traditional Western philosophy through his philosophy of organism.
