다르마키르티와 화이트헤드 사상의 접점(Ⅰ) - 현실적 존재(vastu, actual entity)를 중심으로 -

Abstract

Dhrmakīrti(法稱, 600-660) was a Buddhist Philosopher of India in 7th Century. He systemizes the epistemological logics of Buddhism on the background ‘causal epistemology of Sautrāntika’ and ‘logics of Dignāga.’ He insists that the essence of vastu be kṣaṇikatva and arthakriyākāritva. Whitehead(白頭, 1861-1947) was a Process Philosopher of England in 20th Century. He systemizes the organic philosophy on the background ‘the theory of prehension’ and ‘the theory of extension’. He insists that the essence of actual entity be momentariness and causal efficacy. This paper compares Dharmakīrti's vastu with Whitehead's actual entity. In other words, Dharmakīrti's vastu corresponds to Whitehead's actual entity. Dharmakīrti's kṣaṇikatva corresponds to Whitehead's momentariness. Dharmakīrti's arthakriyākāritva corresponds to Whitehead's causal efficacy. Vastu and actual entity is ‘the final real thing of which the world is made up. There is no going behind vastu and actual entity to find anything else furthermore real' in the world. Dharmakīrti and Whitehead insist that the essence of vastu and actual entity not be ‘change’, but ‘momentariness’.
