Abstract
The writer thinks that the comparative study on the East-West thoughts must be generally executed in terms of their difference(even, disagreement). For me it seems to be more substantial and productive. However, this thesis makes a comparison between the Yogācāra School(or Consciousness-only School) of the East and the Process Philosophy of A. N. Whitehead of the West in falling under the category of idealism. The former has philosophically been one of the principal axes of the Mahayana Buddhism in the East, and the latter is a metaphysical thought of 20 century in the West. This idealistic exploration is the first theme at which the writer aims by means of this thesis. Therefore, striving to display distinctive features which can characterize the two thoughts idealistically, I make a choice the parallel subjects for comparison, Yogācāra's Vijñapti(識, the total eight Vijñãna in details) and the Subjectivist Principle of A. N. Whitehead. I believe and hope they all will disclose idealistic characters of the thoughts of Yogācāra School and Whitehead. Nevertheless, it is unfair only to indicate some points of similarity on them. Although they could be included into the idealistic domain in a sense, my secondary theme is to make clear their important differences(or distinction) in other aspects. I come to understand that the core difference between them is on whether the external world exist in our perceptual experience or not. The Yogācāra School has asserted there are not any other thing and the world except the perceptual mind(or knower) Owing to this point, the Yogācāra School is also called Consciousness-only School. All the things(the visible, or the invisible) of the world around us is purely created by the perceptual mind(Vijñapti, Creation out of Mind). But Whitehead's idealism contends the experiential appropriation of external world through the its Subjectivist Principle. To appropriate is not to perceive the external world itself, but to perceive it idealistically for self-formative activity. This is that which the Vijñapti and the Subjectivist Principle means respectively.
