Abstract

If a member of family has cancer, the family confronts a serious economic hardship because of indirect costs as well as direct medical costs. In addition to the high level of direct costs from medical treatments, cancer increases the possibility of the patient losing his/her job and a family member being out of the labor market to provide care services for the patient. For these reasons, the incidence of cancer will result in an economic crisis in the family. This study aims to investigate which factors affect the direct and indirect costs of the cancer. The data is gathered from interviews with family members caring for a patient with cancer in 10 local hospitals. The results indicate that gender, the existence of spouse and age variables are negatively related to the amount of indirect costs. More specifically, families with a female patient experience relatively low burden of indirect cost, because the labor force participation rate and earning of females are in general lower than those of males. Also, singles are more likely to be cared by a working family member or hire a person for care services, which result in a higher indirect cost. Finally, cancer for a young family causes more severe indirect burden for the family. The policy implications are as follows : first, the extension of the 2006 reform of health insurance to limit the ceiling of private payments; second, the enactment of new program to provide income support for persons with severe illness; and finally, the development of new delivery system to arrange service providers without fee for the patients.
