잡지 만화와 만평으로 본 여성 - 작가 의식을 통한 식민지적 근대를 중심으로

본 연구는 서구적 근대가 여성 표상을 통해서 어떻게 식민지적 근대를 형성해 갔는가를 잡지에 나타난 만화나 만평을 통해 밝히고자 하였다. 이때 식민지적 근대는 끊임없이 동요하면서 협력과 저항의 양면적인 모습을 보이는 회색지대, 즉 지배양식과 맞아 떨어지지 않고 서구적 근대와 대립하면서도 착종되는 지점을 이른다. 바꿔 말하면 서구적 근대가 기존의 전통이나 이념을 만나면서 그것이 그대로 사회구성원들에게 답습되지 않으며 오히려 사회구성원들은 그것을 전통과 교합하는 지점에서 서구적 근대와는 다른 식민지적 근대를 형성해 나간다는 것이다. 이 점을 분석하기 위해 본 글은 작가가 사회적 인식을 포착하는데 있어서 만화나 만평을 통해 여성의 표상을 어떻게 표현하고 있는가에 초점을 맞춤으로써 작가의 의식을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이때 작가의 의식은 사회 구성원들의 의식을 정확하게 포착한 작가 혹은 편집자의 표현이자 선택이다. 만화와 만평에 주목한 것은 우선 기존의 연구가 지나치게 문학작품 내지 텍스트 중심이었다는 데에 있다. 다른 한편 서구적 근대가 여성 표상을 통해 어떻게 굴절되고 있는지를 만화와 만평은 생생하게 드러내고 있기 때문이기도 하다. 만화와 만평을 통해서 드러나는 여성에 대한 작가의 의식은 아이러니와 희화화라는 방식을 통해서 표출되고 있다. 아이러니와 희화화라는 방식을 통해서 표현되고 있는 여성상은 사회적 의식이 이중성을 지니거나 균열된 지점이 있음을 반증한다. 만화와 만평에 표현된 여성의 상은 서구적 이미지를 지니고 있음에도 어딘지 모르게 한국적인 여성의 상을 지니고 있다. 이때 여성상은 서구적 이면서도 서구 여성과는 다른 민족 전통의 특징들을 드러낸 내면화된 여성이다. 그러니까 만화와 만평에 나타난 여성상은 외양이든 의식이든 서구적인 근대의 상을 지녀야 하지만 여전히 전근대적인 여성상을 포기하고 있지 않다. 이때 여성상을 통해서 드러나는 아이러니와 회화화라는 작가의 표현은 서구적 근대에만 침잠되지 않는, 즉 서구적 근대를 추종하면서도 식민지적 근대로 서고자 하는 사회적 의식을 제대로 포착한 작가의 주체적인 표현이기도 하다. 그렇다면 근대적 여성의 상은 명확해진다. 단지 근대 외피를 두른 여인상과는 달리 사회적 인식은 근대로 향한 적극성 속에서도 예의를 지킬 줄 아는 여성을 원하고 있었던 것이다. 이때 '예의 있는 여성'을 요구하는 지점이야말로 서구적 근대를 단지 근대로 받아들일 수 없는, 재조정이 이루어져 식민지적 관대 여성의 상이 탄생하고 있는 지점이다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the magazine cartoons and caricatures of the colonial modern days, along with the process in which the westernized modern images of femininity become the colonial images. The colonial images are involved in what's called "Gray Zone", which contains dual aspects: cooperation and resistance. Although they are not compatible with the ruling policy but confronted with it, they're eventually settled down. In other words, the westernized modern images of femininity come to meet the existing convention and ideas, giving birth to the colonial modern images of femininity. For the purpose of its analysis, this study deals with the consciousness of writers and focuses on the images of femininity in cartoons and caricatures. Writers or editors pick up and represent the consciousness of each member of the society. The reason why this study focuses on cartoons and caricatures is that the existing researches excessively have depended on only literary works or texts. Another reason is that cartoons and caricature can vividly show the process in which the westernized modern images turn into other image. The consciousness of writers toward femininity in cartoons and caricatures is expressed through irony and satire. Such femininity shows social dualism or rupture. Thus, the images contain the characteristics of both western images and Korean images. The images of femininity through irony and satire include the images of westernized modern images externally or internally. And also the images don't give up some conventional Korean images. Writers make the most of the techniques of irony and satire in order to express their consciousness of modern femininity which pursues the westernized images and the colonial images at the same time. As we've seen, the desirable images of modern femininity are not superficial ones but courteous ones, along with active attitudes. This study concludes that the demanding of courteous modern femininity readjusts the westernized images and brings forth the colonial images.
