강용흘(1903?~1972)은 1921년 미국으로 건너가 활동한 재미작가이다. 그의문학작품이 주목받는 것은 크게 두 가지 이유에서다. 하나는 영어로 발표한 그의작품들이 재외 한인문학 혹은 이민자 문학으로 분류되면서 한국문학의 개념과 범주에 대한 새로운 인식을 촉구하는 계기가 되었다는 점이다. 또 하나는 그가 발표한 세 편의 소설 중 『초당 The Grass Roof』과 『행복의 숲 The Happy Grove』에 고시조를 비롯하여 민요, 한용운의 시 등이 소개되어 있다는 사실이다. 특히 33편 의 고시조 자료들은 게일에 이어 두 번째로 서양 세계에 소개된 시조 英譯이라는 점에서 의미가 크다. 본고는 이 중 그의 소설 속에 삽입된 고시조 자료들을 대상으로 하여 형식·내용 양면에서 드러나는 그의 시조 영역의 구체적 양상을 살피고(2장), 시조가 서사적 맥락 속에 삽입되어 있다는 점에서 이를 散韻혼합담론으로 규정하고 산문서술과의 관계 속에서 시조의 기능을 살피며(3장), 게일과 변영태와의비교를 통해 강용흘의 번역사적 위상을 조명하고자 하였다(4장).
Abstract
Kang Younghill(1903?-1972) is a Korean-American writer who went over to America in 1921. It is for two reasons that his literary works have been paid attentions. One is that his novels in English have been classified as a diaspora Korean literature or a Korean immigration literature in America thereby serving as a momentum for calling attention to the re-examination of the conception and boundary of Korean literature. The other is that various kinds of classical Korean verses such as sijo , folk songs, Sino-Korean poetry, and poems of Han Yong-un, etc. are introduced in his two novels,The Grass Roof and The Happy Grove . Of these, 33 pieces of classical sijo are of great significance in the sense that they constitute the second case of English translation of sijo following Gale’s ones. Working with these 33pieces of sijo , this article intends to investigate Kang’s detailed translation style both in form and in content, to look into a function of sijo in its relationship to the narrative context, and finally to illuminate his position in Korean translation history.
