Abstract

In 1936, Yeom Sang-sup and Park Pal-yang moved to Manchuria, a land of Five Ethnic Reconciliation, which was relatively a free space for Koreans. They emphasized the identity of the Korean people while working for the daily newspaper, but when the press department of Kwandong Army began to intervene actively, Yeom Sang-sup quit the daily newspaper and went to Andong, while Park Pal-yang stayed in the Shinkyungrves and went through the difficulties in her own way. Yeom Sang-seop wrote the preface of the Great Land of Bud (1941), a collection of short stories by Korean novelists of Manchukuo, and Park Pal-yang wrote the preface while he contained his poems in The Collection of Manchukuo Poet (1942), a collection of poems by Korean poets of Manchukuo. They did not cooperate until Imperial Japan collapsed and endured the turbulence well in Manchukuo. After liberation, Yeom Sang-sup moved from Andong to Sinuiju, and Park Pal-yang moved from Shinkyung to Sinuiju to watch the political future of the South and North Korea. However, when the North Korea's land reform was carried out based on the democratic base theory, Yeom Sang-seop decided that it would undermine the independent unification of the Korean Peninsula and chose Seoul instead of Pyongyang, while Park Pal-yang chose Pyongyang's regime instead of Seoul after hearing the news of the land reform of North Korea. Yeom Sang-sup aspired to become a unified and independent democracy encompassing those who came from Manchuria through the boy of quarry, while Park Pal-yang emphasized North Korea's legitimacy and the theory of democratic bases through poems that represent Manchurian anti-Japanese independence movements. In the Cold War South Korean society, where mentioning the Manchukuo itself was considered disturbing despite its deep continuity, Yeom could no longer recreate the Manchukuo and ended his life in its harsh oppression. Park Pal-yang, who had sought to counter the North's situation in which Kim Il-sung's anti-Japanese revolutionary movement in Manchuria was absolute, eventually did not join the Juche regime. Studying the Korean literature in the context of Manchukuo must be very important in the future, as they were not properly highlighted by the oppressive policies of the two Koreas during the Cold War.
