유교 인륜도덕의 보편화 가능성 문제

이 글의 목적은 유교 윤리 즉 유교 인륜도덕의 보편성이 어떤 차원에서 이루어질 수 있는지를 모색하는 것이다. 특별히 이 글은 忠恕라는 형식적 원리에서 유교윤리의 보편성을 찾는 해석과 ‘구체적 보편’ 혹은 ‘초월적 내재’라는 개념들을 통해 유교 윤리의 특성을 말하는 해석을 살펴본다. 그러고 나서, 도덕 원리에 있어서, 정당화의 맥락과 동기부여화의 맥락의 구분 혹은 보편성 수립의 차원과 보편성 구현의 차원의 구분의 틀을 적용해 봄으로서, 위 해석들을 발전적으로 지양한 대안적 해석을 제시해보려고 한다. 우리의 대안적 해석에 의하면, 충서에 기반을 둔 해석은 유교 윤리에서 핵심적인 관습과 감정을 충실히 반영하지 못하고, 구체적 보편에 입각한 해석은 유교 윤리의 구체성이 보편성 구현의 차원에서만 적실성이 있다는 사실을 잘 인정하지 않는다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to search for in what dimensions the universality of Confucian ethics can be found. This paper especially examines two previous interpretations seeking for the universality of Confucian ethics: the one seeks for the universality of Confucian ethics in such formal principle as zhongshu (忠恕, conscientiousness and altruism) and the other finds it through the concepts of 'concrete universal' or 'transcendental immanence'. After that, I suggest an alternative interpretation which is based on the distinction between the justification of and the motivation of morality. From the view of mine, while the zhongshu-based interpretation does not disclose the uniqueness of Confucian ethics with the emphasis of customs and emotion, the interpretation which pays attention to the concept of concrete universal does not acknowledge the fact that the concreteness of Confucian ethics is viable only in the process of actualizing morality, not in the process of establishing morality as universal.
