남녀 노인의 생애주기별 성생활(sexual relationship) 인식의 변화

성(性)은 인간의 전 생애주기와 관련 있는 주제임에도 불구하고, 노년의 성은 다른 생애주기에 비해 주변화 되거나 터부시되어 왔다. 특히 기존연구들은 기능적인 측면에 초점을 두어 노인의 성을 다른 생애주기에 속한 사람들과 차별된 성이라는 생각을 심화시켜왔다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 남녀 노인 10명의 심층인터뷰를 통한 질적분석방법으로 생애주기별 성생활 인식의 변화에 관하여 살펴보았다. 본 연구의 주요결과는 생애주기별로 다음과 같이 나타났다. 첫째, 성인초기 여성에게 성은 부자연스럽고 낯선 경험이었으며, 남성은 자연스러운 욕구의 분출이었다. 성지식의 부재 상황에서 성에 관한 경험이 선행되었던 여성, 생물학적 관점에서 성을 본능과 욕구 충족이라는 방식으로 접근하였던 남성간의 성생활에 대한 인식의 차이가 확연히 나타난다. 둘째, 성인중기의 여성은 성생활을 통한 성적만족감과 정서적 만족감이 동시에 경험되면서 이 시기를 성생활의 전성기로 정의하고, 남성은 성생활의 관계 중심적 관점을 조금씩 인식하면서도 여전히 본능과 욕구중심으로 성에 관한 접근을 한다. 셋째, 성인후기에서 여성은 폐경을 경험하고, 성욕구의 일시적 감소는 성생활을 위한 적극적인 노력과 스킨십, 애무 등의 성생활이 극대화 되면서 긍정적인 성인식을 갖는다. 남성은 욕구에 부응하지 못하는 신체기능의 상실로 심리적인 갈등을 경험한다. 넷째, 노년기에서 남성은 지금까지 성생활이 남성 중심적이며 일방적인 패턴을 유지하고 있었다는 자기 성찰과 성생활의 가장 큰 전제는 상호작용임을 비로소 인식하게 되며, 여성 역시 남성노인의 성생활 패턴에 따라 성생활이 충분히 가능한 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구결과를 토대로 사회복지실천에서 노인과 성에 관한 실천적 접근을 관계 중심적으로 전환할 필요가 있다는 것과, 생애주기별 성인식의 구체적이고 심층적 비교를 통한 후속연구가 이루어질 필요가 있음을 제언하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the changes of the perceptions on the sexual relationship among male and female elders through their whole lives. Though sex has been a critical theme of human-beings over whole their lifetimes, the previous studies on the sex of elders have distinguished the period of the aged from the time of pre-aged by focusing mainly on the physical aspects of sexual functioning. To view sex as a lifetime issue, this study implemented the qualitative analysis through the in-depth retrospective interviews on 10 male and female elders. The study results compared perceptions on the sexual relationship between male and female elders from early adulthood to the present elderly time. : First, while sex was unnatural and unfamiliar experience for female elders in their early adulthoods, it was a natural way to express sexual desires for males in their early adulthoods. Second, in the mid-time of the adulthood, the female elders retrospect this period as the best time of their sexual relationships with their sexual and emotional satisfactions, while male elders regarded sex as an approach to meet their natural desires. Third, in the later-time of the adulthood, females made extra efforts to overcome their decreasing sexual desires and satisfactions due to their menopauses, while males experienced the psychological conflicts between their physical functioning and sexual desires. Lastly, in the elderly time of their lives, males began to recognize self-reflections of the male-driven sexual relationship without considering their partners’ emotions and desires, while females tried to keep their sexual relationships along with their partners’ sexual patterns and paces. These findings provoke implications of the significance in relationship-based interventions and in the recognition of lifetime approaches with regard to sex of elders.
