자원봉사와 우울 궤적의 종단적 관계: 세 연령집단 간 다집단 비교

초록

본 연구는 잠재성장모형을 통해서 자원봉사가 우울수준의 종단적 궤적에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 확인하고, 다중집단분석을 통해서 이러한 영향이 초기성인기와 중·장년기 및 노년기 연령집단에 따라 차이가 있는지를 분석한 연구이다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 한국복지패널 1차 년도부터 7차 년도까지 참여한 20세 이상 성인 14,145명을 분석대상으로 하였다. 주요결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 우울궤적의 무조건부 모형 분석은 평균적으로 우울은 시간이 갈수록 낮아지는 결과를 보였다. 무조건부 모형에 대한 연령집단별 다중집단분석 결과, 연령이 높은 집단일수록 출발점 우울수준이 높았으나 우울변화궤적은 모든 연령집단에서 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 2) 자원봉사가 우울궤적에 미치는 영향의 조건부모형을 분석한 결과 자원봉사에 참여한 사람일수록 우울의 초기값이 낮았으며 이러한 차이는 7차 년도까지 유지되었다. 3) 그러나 연령집단별로 차이를 살펴본 결과 초기성인기의 개인들의 경우 자원봉사를 한 집단과 하지 않은 집단의 우울 초기값과 기울기에는 차이가 없어 자원봉사가 우울에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 중·장년기의 경우 자원봉사를 한 집단의 우울 초기값은 자원봉사를 하지 않은 집단보다 높았으나 시간이 갈수록 그 차이는 완화되는 것으로 나타났다. 노년기의 경우, 자원봉사를 한 집단은 그렇지 않은 집단에 비해 우울의 초기값이 낮았고 그 차이는 시간이 지나도 유지되는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 자원봉사와 우울의 관계는 연령 집단별로 차이가 있으며 특히 중·장년기와 노년기의 자원봉사가 정신건강과 관련이 크다는 점을 시사한다. 본 연구결과를 바탕으로 자원봉사와 정신건강에 대한 이론적 실천적 함의를 논의하였다.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the longitudinal relationship between volunteer experience and depression trajectory using Latent Growth Curve Modeling and to examine wether it varies by age groups using Multi-group Structural Equation Modeling. A total of 14,145 individuals aged 20 and over who participated in the Korean Welfare Panel Study from 2006 to 2011 were included in the analysis. Age groups were divided into three: young (20-40 or less), middle-aged (40-60 or less), and old adults (60 and over). Main results are as follows. 1) On average, the level of depression decreased over the 6 years but the trajectory varied by age groups. Specifically, old adults started with the highest level of depression and declined relatively more slowly compared to other age groups. 2) Volunteer participation lowered depression level at the beginning of the study. However, the rate of change was not statistically significant, meaning that the difference between volunteers and none volunteers remained consistently. 3) The effects of volunteer participation on depression varied by age groups. That is, volunteers and none volunteers among young adults did not show any differences in depression trajectory, whereas the depression trajectories of middle-aged and old adults varied by volunteer experience. Volunteers in middle-aged were less depressive in the 1st year but the size of difference decreased over time. Volunteers in old adults were less depressive in the 1st year and the difference of depression level remained consistently. These findings indicate that volunteer experience is associated with lower levels of depression but the relationship varied by age groups. Based on the findings, practical implications for research and practice are discussed.
