Abstract
This phenomenological, qualitative study is designed to explore the meaning of coming out as a major life task of sexual minority youths. To summarize 9 sexual minority youths’ definitions of coming out reported in an in-depth interviewing process, “Coming out refers to an event or a process which sexual minorities honestly and willingly reveal/inform their sexual identity by recognizing/accepting their sexual identity.” The tasks in the 5 dimensions reflected on the definition above follow as; ‘self-determination and choice’, ‘honest and truthful’, ‘self-awareness of sexual identity’, ‘social dialogue, recognition and resistance’, and ‘an event or a process.’ Ultimately sexual minority youths perform their unique tasks of ‘self-realization’ by ‘making a sexual identity process positive’, but more essentially, they design and accomplish their own happiness by looking forward to three visions/directions: 1) ‘object to agent’, 2) ‘self-denial to self-positivity’, 3) ‘silence to voice.’ Suggestions include a theoretical model of a total meaning of coming out and social work practice for sexual minority youths to support their developmental growth based on the insider’s perspective.
