Abstract

This study aims to explore the recurrence of child maltreatment after family reunification. Using administrative data entered in the National Child Maltreatment Information System, 2,879 children reunited with their families after being protected in out-of-home placement due to maltreatment from 2015 to 2017 were followed up until July 15, 2019. An event history analysis was conducted using the life table analysis and Cox proportional hazard model. The result showed that the recurrence of maltreatment occurred in 3.79% of all cases. The possibility of recurrence of maltreatment was highest within 1 month after family reunification, and 95.41% of all recurrence of maltreatment occurred within the 6 months. Children’s externalizing problem behavior, parental alcohol problem, lack of parenting skills, family economic difficulty, and shorter lengths of stay in out-of-home placement were risk factors that increase the possibility of recurrence of maltreatment after family reunification. Based on the above results, practical and policy implications for successful family reunification were discussed.
