Abstract

Family stress model suggests that economic hardship and related financial stress can affect family relationship and family conflict. This is a longitudinal study of the impact of household debt on family conflict. Data for the analyses include 13 waves of the Korea Welfare Panel Data(2008-2020). The sample was consisted of 92,051 cases who were 18 years or older and have been married. A fixed-effect regression models was applied for multivariate analyses. The results show that a higher proportion of subprime loans is associated with a greater level of family conflict while a total amount of debt is not. The findings suggest that the quality of debt rather than the amount of debt can play an important role in terms of family conflict. Practice implications were discussed.
