Abstract
This study examines the roles of household financial conditions, including income, assets, and debt, on depressive symptoms and the risk of intimate partner violence. Data for analyses were the 12th wave of the Korea Welfare Panel Survey data based on a nationally representative sample. The sample includes 3262 couples(a total of 6,524 individuals. The major findings are as follows: First, the higher household disposable income is associated with a lower risk of intimate partner violence; Second, while the debt-to-disposable income ratio is not associated with the risk of intimate partner violence, the high level of subprime loans is associated with an increased risk of intimate partner violence; Third, depressive symptoms appear to mediate such relationships; Fourth, the roles of financial conditions on the risk of intimate partner violence vary by the gender of the couple, and the actor effect and partner effect can be distinguished. The findings of this study suggest that the high level of subprime loans rather than the debt-to-income ratio can play an important role in the quality of marital relationships, and that stress coping and counseling programs need be considered for households with a high level of debt burden.
