Abstract
This qualitative study aims to explore the ways in which indebted individuals understand the meanings and implications of debt relief in their own lives. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with nine people who have completed or were in the final stage of the process of debt relief. Data were analyzed by the Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological method. Analyzes of the data have yielded seven themes: uncontrollable indebtedness; being alienated from family; being alienated from friends; being alienated from themselves; uncertainty of lives; ambivalence in the process of debt relief; and acknowledging current situation. The findings enhance our understanding of the lives of individuals who are over-indebted and rely on debt relief. Implications for more effective debt relief programs are suggested.
