본 연구는 미국 고등학교 경제교사의 경험·학습자 중심이론에 기반을 둔 금융 교육 우수 수업사례를 분석하고 한국 중·고등학교 금융교육에 대한 시사점을 제언하고자 한다. 듀이의 경험이론에 근거한 본 연구는, 질적연구방법을 통해 한 학기 동안 교사 Jenny의 수업을 관찰하고 교사와의 심층 면담을 진행하였으며 금융교육 교과과정과 교수학습자료를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, Jenny는 학생들이 경제주체자로서 실질적인 경제적 의사결정을 체험할 수 있는 기회를 제공하였고 비판적, 분석적 사고를 통해 합리적 의사결정능력을 발달시킬 수 있도록 도모하였다. 또한 구안학습을 통해 자기주도적 학습을 가능하게 하고, 협동학습을 통해 공공의 선을 위한 의사결정능력을 함양시키고자 하였다. 이를 통해 지식, 기능, 가치·태도라는 사회과교육의 목표를 균형 있게 구현하였다.
Abstract
This study explores how one exemplary social studies teacher practiced experience-based financial literacy education at a high school in the United States. Framed by theory of experience, this qualitative study examined the ways in which Jenny, the teacher, successfully implemented financial education that is related to the real life experiences of young learners. Findings indicate that the following 4 approaches characterized Jenny’s teaching practices: (1)selecting topics that reflect real life economic issues and providing multiple economic decision making opportunities, (2)advancing analytic and critical thinking skills as tools for rational economic decision making, (3)promoting student-centered learning based upon projects and community sources, and (4)developing collective knowledge and values/ attitudes for the public good through cooperative learning. It was evident that Jenny, drawing upon the 4 approaches, was able to address the democratic citizenship goals of social studies education in a balanced way. This study seeks to contribute to generating further discussion on what it means to educate financially literate citizens and providing practical implications for economic education in Korean educational context.
