Abstract
This study empirically examines the social relational meaning of work by analyzing the impact of retirement on social relationships of middle-aged and elderly individuals from a longitudinal perspective. Using data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA), this research compares changes in social relationships between complete retirees and the labor market participants. Through propensity score matching, difference-in-differences analysis, and fixed-effects panel regression models, this study found that retirement has a significant negative impact on bonding social capital formed around non-kinship relations (such as alumni associations and friendship gatherings) and kinship-centered bonding social capital. However, retirement showed a limited but positive effect on bridging social capital (including leisure/cultural activities, volunteering, and civic participation). The findings suggest that in Korean society, work functions as a central axis for social identity formation and relationship building beyond mere income generation. The study provides important theoretical implications for understanding the multidimensional value of work and practical implications for policy approaches that view job policies not only as means of income security but also as platforms for maintaining and expanding social relationships in an aging society.
